10 Things to Know About Veneers

If you’re looking at options to correct a dental imperfection, you are probably considering veneers. Porcelain veneers have become a staple in cosmetic dentistry due to their remarkable ability to address many different types of dental imperfections. Whether it's discoloration, chipping, misalignment, or irregularities in tooth shape, veneers offer a versatile and aesthetically pleasing solution to correct a less-than-perfect smile. Although you may already know the basics, it can be helpful to understand more about the process, costs, and care of veneers.

To assist you in your cosmetic dentistry decision-making process, Dr. Peck is sharing 10 things you should know about veneers!

  1. Veneers are Permanent!

    1. Porcelain veneers require your dentist to remove a thin layer of enamel from the front of your teeth. This process is needed to ensure that the veneer fits the teeth correctly and looks as natural as possible. This enamel cannot grow back, meaning this procedure is irreversible. After you have your veneers placed, they’ll need to be maintained or replaced if damaged.

  2. The Cost of Veneers can vary.

    1. Veneers are considered a cosmetic procedure and are not typically covered by dental insurance. The total cost of your procedure will vary based on the number of teeth that will have veneers, the material used, the lab that your dentist uses to manufacture the veneers, and any dental office fees. The average cost for a single veneer in the U.S. is $1,765, but the cost ranges between $500 and $2,895. A full set, made of six to eight single veneers, averages $15,486 in the U.S. While the cost may be higher than other cosmetic procedures, many patients find the long-lasting results and aesthetic benefits well worth the investment. If you’re worried about affordability, ask your dentist about payment plans or financing options.

  3. Veneer preparation can (and should) be minimal.

    1. Unlike some dental procedures that require significant tooth reduction or even removal, (such as a crown or implant) veneers typically require minimal tooth preparation. Your dentist should try to conserve as much of your enamel as they possibly can while still ensuring the veneer will sit correctly and look natural.

  4. Veneers can look as natural as you want.

    1. Porcelain veneers can offer an exceptionally natural appearance. The dental porcelain used in their production is able to mimic the light-reflecting properties of natural teeth. Your dentist will also ensure the veneers match the color and translucency of your neighboring teeth that may be visible. The goal is to design the perfect shape, color, and size of veneers that will complement your facial features. Although many people think of the oversized, too perfect, stark-white celebrity veneers, today's veneers aim to mimic the subtleties and imperfections found in natural teeth, ensuring a smile that is both beautiful and authentic.

  5. You don’t have to have veneers on every tooth.

    1. Veneers are completely customizable to your needs. If only a few of your teeth have imperfections that you would like to address, you can have veneers placed on just those teeth. The amount of teeth that are visible when you smile or speak vary person to person, and you may not need or want veneers on teeth that are less noticeable. Your dentist can work with you on a customized plan to help achieve your smile goals.

  6. Not everyone is a candidate for veneers.

    1. Veneers are designed to be attached to the front of healthy teeth. Patients with significant decay or damage to their teeth may not be a good candidate for veneers and may require pre-treatment or a crown or implant instead. Your dentist will be able to advise you on the condition of your existing teeth and your options for veneers versus other cosmetic improvements.

  7. It’s a multi-step process.

    1. Getting porcelain veneers generally involves two appointments:

    • First Visit: Your dentist will prepare the teeth, take impressions, and place temporary veneers.

    • Second Visit: Once your custom veneers are ready, they’ll be bonded permanently to your teeth.

  8. “Veneer Expert” or “Veneer Technician” are not ADA recognized certifications.

    1. Dentists, especially cosmetic dentists, are the only professionals qualified to place dental veneers. There are no certifications or licensing programs for “veneer technicians”. Patients’ teeth need to be clinically evaluated before veneer are placed and ensuring proper techniques and sterilization is extremely important. A cosmetic dentist with years of experience in veneer placement (like Dr. Peck) is your best bet to ensure great results.

  9. Veneers are very stain-resistant.

    1. Unlike your natural enamel, porcelain veneers are highly resistant to stains, making them an fantastic option for individuals who enjoy their coffee, tea, or red wine. With proper maintenance, your veneers can maintain their color and shine for many years to come.

  10. You should treat your veneers just like a part of your natural teeth.

    1. Maintaining your porcelain veneers is relatively easy. It’s essential to practice good oral hygiene all of your teeth, including regular brushing, flossing, and scheduling regular dental visits. Taking care of your veneers will help them look beautiful and last for as long as possible - they are an investment after all!

Porcelain veneers are a good option to significantly enhance your smile and self-confidence. But like any dental procedure, it’s important to understand the process, go through the pros and cons, and choose a dental team that you feel comfortable with.
